Hands-on Learning
Cojiform offers a range of applications within STEAM programing, while also supporting SEL goals. Students can explore topics such as algorithmic systems, pattern design, abstract art and narrative, cantilevering or other engineering challenges. Aside from specific themes, Cojiform is a great way to practice a growth mind set. The system is centered on experimentation, persistence, curiosity, collaboration, and embracing limitations.
Modes of Engagement
Using a Cojiform kit can be as simple as placing the parts on a table and letting students explore the possibilities. That said, support materials are available with prompts and ideas to help educators use the kits in various structured, goal oriented ways. For example, art students can build with Cojiform and then use their compositions as still-life drawing subjects to practice shadow and gradation. Educators and students are encouraged to invent new ways to use the Cojiform system. Cojiform shares a collective aspect similar to origami or quilting: participants can invent new modules or approaches that can be passed on to future participants. In fact many of the most intriguing known designs have been invented or influenced by participants.
Everything built with Cojiform is temporary: photography allows students to document their work. Similar to the drawing activity shown above, photography (below) is another way for students to engage with their aesthetic sensibilities, the formal elements of art, and with creative process. A paper backdrop and lighting can be included with a Cojiform kit, allowing students to capture studio-quality photographs of their compositions with a smartphone or camera. Photos can be shared on social media, or emailed to founder Isaac Bower to be posted on Instagram @cojiform. While school policies may limit the use of smartphones, this activity allows for productive dialogue surrounding ways to use phones and social media in meaningful and creative ways.
Kit leasing and Events
Cojiform kits can be leased and delivered to your location: a kit is generally leased for 2-4 weeks. This allows students to build their skills with repeated engagement. Cojiform has been used within art and math classes, and also within school libraries.
Schools located in the western PA/tristate area can book founder Isaac Bower for in-person workshops or pop-ups. These can be stand-alone events or can occur during the period of a kit loan. Please email Isaac to discuss bringing Cojiform to your learners.
